1950s Malaya

I seem to disappear on you fine folks more & more these days huh? Sorry about that. I’ve been living in a bubble & besides confirming the date, there have been NO plans or progress whatsoever in regards to the wedding.

Except for one thing that is. Inspired by our nation’s recent Independence Day celebration (Happy Merdeka everyone!), I’ve decided that we’re gonna go for a 1950’s/early 1960’s Malaya theme for the wedding reception on my side. That’s right: kebaya ketat & songkok tinggi, joget lambak & twist, gin & tonic, P.Ramlee & Saloma, vinyls & Vespas.

no tea ceremony

as some of you may already know from my other blog, my grandmother passed away recently (i blogged about it here & here). as such, there will be no tea ceremony, in respect to the chinese custom. luckily my family is not the ultra-conservative type otherwise there won’t be any wedding at all for at least a whole year! yikes.

anyways, bobby was a little bummed that we won’t have the whole chi muis ragging the heng tais thing & i’m sad that i won’t be able to fulfill the one thing my popo has always wanted: to serve her tea on my wedding day. she even saved a gorgeous empty ang pow packet bobby gave her last chinese new year to give us at the tea ceremony... even thinking about it gets me all choked up. ah well, some things are just not meant to be but most of all, i miss my popo.

we have decided on the venue for the wedding reception on my side & we just need to confirm the dates then we can start setting the wheels in motion.

right now we're all in a flutter over the akad nikah. my father & step mom have expressed a desire to throw a middle eastern themed akad nikah at my father's new house. at first my heart sank a little because i wanted something a little more "me" but then when i remembered how much the akad nikah is also about the family, i thought let them have it their way. plus hey, i think a mid-east theme would definitely be fun as our family loves to travel, we all love the culture, my father has heaps of mid-east decor from his frequent travels to egypt & we know where to get great mid-eastern food catered so it might work out for the best. but how do i work in the chinese tea ceremony after the akad nikah?? oh the dilemma!

these are the colors i want for my akad nikah. i want everything to be awash with sweet, pastel colors & i want to wear the palest, creamiest, white & a spanish mantilla wedding veil.

we have a date!

my father just blocked a date with the hotel & it looks like our wedding will be on april 2nd! no, there's nothing significant with the date (i'm not fussed about it anyways). the only thing i specified was no school holiday or public holiday & please not on a friday (i hate rushing through friday after-work jam for a wedding). we will most probably have everything done in one day (akad nikah, tea ceremony + reception) but will keep everything simple, simple, simple. i really really wish that we could just have one reception instead of a second one just for the bobby's side but my step mum insists on it. sigh, what to do? just having one shared reception would save him a lot of money that can then be put into a house for us...

p/s: i did a little google search by simply entering auspicious date 2011 & came up with this (it seems the 1st & 3rd of april is very good)

panic

feeling a wee bit overwhelmed now. with just less than 2 weeks to go to the bertunang, i still have tonnes more to do!
